When the port of Yokohama was opened to foreign ships in 1859, Japanese artists pictured the first foreigners with a mixture of keen observation and delightful misinformation. Woodblock prints from the collection of Melvin P. McGovern of Honolulu depict foreigners, their buildings, forms of transportation, and their activities, as they appeared to the curious Japanese. Similar works from Nagasaki and 19th-century wood block print maps of the two ports will be in the exhibition.
