A taste for illustrated books, accompanied by an increased need to order and classify experience, accounted for the popularity in Northern Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries of printed sets and series. The visual and intellectual impact of the complete set of prints is considerably more exciting than that of an isolated example. this exhibition, organized at the Yale University Art Gallery, presents twelve sets-- 120 prints-- that give a tangible idea of the variety of fascinating subject matter that intrigued the earlier Northern European printmakers, publishers and collectors. Stephen Goddard, curator of prints, co-authored the catalogue which is available.

Northern European prints from the 16th and 17th centuries ranged in subject from landscapes to biblical themes, from butterflies to Turkish history.
