Description

The most popular play of traditional Japanese theatre is doubtless Chushingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), based on a historical vendetta in the 18th century. The incident has served as inspiration for many Japanese artists, including Hiroshige, Utamaro, Toyokuni, and Kuniyoshi, all of whom designed woodblock prints in the mid-19th century. This exhibition will include 30 prints from the collection and a 55-foot hand scroll which illustrates action from eleven scenes in the play. A selection of Japanese arms and armor will also be displayed.
