  • 18-Jan-1987 - 07-Mar-1987
  • White Gallery, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas

The nineteenth-century English painter John Martin was well known for his monumental paintings of Biblical scenes which frequently combined images of disaster with dramatic architectural details. He also made mezzotints, a technique which produces very rich blacks and strong contrasts, especially appropriate for his cataclysmic subject matter. One painting an fifty-five prints dating rom 1816 to 1842 will be on view in this exhibition which was organized at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. It is supported at KU by the museum's corporate and Business members.
