Tom Allen, Hallmark Distinguished Professor of Illustration at the University of Kansas, is honorary Curator of this exhibition based on the book of the same name edited by Steven Heller and published by Van Nostrand Reinhold in 1986. Two works each by twenty-one leading illustrators featured in the book-- Julian Allen, tom Allen, Marshall Arisman, Bascove, Guy Billout, Seymour Chwast, Alan E. Cober, Sue Coe, John Collier, Paul Davis, Milton Glaser, James Grashow, Robert Grossman, Brad Holland, James McMullan, Barbara Nessim, Robert Andrew Parker, Maurice Sendak, Elwood Smith, Edward Sorel, and Robert Weaver-- will be on view. Heller wrote, "Each one has contributed to the modern perception of illustration, has raised the conceptual and aesthetic values of the form, and continues to make a stylistic impact on the field." Glaser, illustrator and owner of the design firm of Milton Glazer, Inc. will be the opening speaker at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 27 in the Spencer Museum auditorium. The exhibition will be circulated by the Mid-America Arts Alliance from August 1988 to October 1990.
