  • 07-Sep-2002 - 20-Oct-2002
  • White Gallery, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas

Organized by the Spencer Museum of Art and supported by Advocacy Research Institute, Inc. and the Judith M. Cooke Fund for Native American Art.

As a kind of corrective to the traditional photographic documentation of American Indians, the four photographers in this exhibition have used their medium both to explore ways their culture has been stereotyped and to create new representations of themselves and their surroundings. The artists often employ humor and irony in these explorations. The media range from black-and-white prints to hand colored and digitally manipulated Ilfo prints. Two of the artists are also filmmakers; their films will be shown Sept. 12 and 19. The exhibition includes the original images from the 1997 poster series Women of Hope. The exhibition was organized in conjunction with the annual Lawrence Indian Art Show.
