  • J. S. G. Boggs: Smart Money (Hard Currency)
  • 05-Apr-1992 - 24-May-1992
  • White Gallery, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas

Boggs is a young American artist living in London who has made a career of drawing exquisitely accurate and beautiful renderings of various currencies and then exchanging the drawing for product, from a meal to an airline ticket. He then assembles a work of art from the currency drawing, documentation of the purchase, and even the change receive in a multi-piece assemblage he calls a "transaction." Boggs does not intend to fool anyone with his trompe l'oiel works, but rather to question the roles and value of art and money in contemporary society. The exhibition was organized and circulated by the Tampa (Florida) Museum of Art.
