  • Adriaen van Ostade: Etchings of Peasant Life in Holland in the Golden Age
  • 25-Mar-1995 - 14-May-1995
  • Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas

All fifty etchings by van Ostade (1610-1685) in an exhibition organized by the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia, Athens, and drawn from the collection of S. William Pelletier of that university's faculty. A contemporary of Rembrandt, can Ostade is often overshadowed by him. The two shared much of the same subject matter, but van Ostade's views are thought to be softened or caricatured. Linda Stone-Ferrier, KU art history professor, addresses his selectivity of subjects and their depiction in on of the exhibition catalogue essays. Both the show and the catalogue were funded by grants from the Georgia Council for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
