Spencer Museum of Art The University of Kansas

  • Gallery of Outstanding Kansans
  • 01-May-1986 - 31-May-1986
  • Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, Kansas

With this Gallery of Outstanding Kansans, the University of Kansas honors notable alumni and friends whose humanitarian contributions have been outstanding. The sphere of their service extends far beyond the university, however, and each has received the university's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Citation for Significant Contributions to Humanity. The university has assembled this gallery of archival-quality color portraits to preserve a record of their significant contributions. Other honorees will be added to this original gallery in future years. After exhibition in the Spencer Museum of Art, the elegant portraits from this first gallery will be housed in the Kansas Collection of the Spencer Research Library. In this way, the University of Kansas provides a permanent resource for those who, in future years, will seek to know the faces, names, and records of those who have contributed to the University of Kansas' progress in the twentieth century. It is especially fitting for the University of Kansas to unveil the Gallery of Outstanding Kansans during its 1986 Commencement celebration. The university can provide no better role models for its new graduates than these forty-six remarkable men and women.
