The top contemporary quilts chosen in a national competition and a selection of the best historical examples from the collection. Quilt National is a biennial competition and exhibition that was begun 20 years ago to advance the idea of quilts as art. This tenth exhibition, Quilt National '97, organized by the Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center, drew 1,254 entries from which 83 quilts by artists from 26 states and 8 countries were selected; 25 of these are on display. To complement this innovative array, a sampling of quilts are shown from the Spencer Museum collection, organized by Curator of European and American art, Susan Earle. These range from an American Revolutionary War period piece to a 1970s masterpiece.
