  • Aaron Douglas inspired quilts/murals by Central Middle School Students and Marla Jackson
  • 01-Jul-2012 - 31-Jul-2012
  • Lobby Gallery, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas

Two large Aaron Douglas inspired paintings by 8th-grade students in Michel Loomis’s English class at Central Middle School will be displayed. One canvas/quilt/painting is 12 feet long/wide; the other is about 6 feet wide. They will both either be quilted by Marla and others, or will be stretched to instead look more like paintings (per Douglas’s work as a painter). The labels will include artist statements by each student. Also, we will display 18 individual quilts made by 4th-graders in Topeka on similar themes. Opening reception tentatively scheduled for Sunday July 15. Topeka children will visit in late August.
