Seated female figure (identified as the Virgin) supports the body of a limp male figure (identified as Christ) on her lap, grasping him firmly with both hands. The figure of Mary is composed of three separate blocks; added in a darker wood are Christ's right arm and the tip of his nose. Parts of the crown of thorns on the male figure's head are broken. Many small checks follow the grain of the wood, and there is a large vertical crack in the head and another check extending down the left side of the body of Christ. Two cracks appear on the face of the Virgin.
