The painting shows a southwest view of an abbey (identified as Fonthill Abbey, England) with a tall central tower and the grounds from a slightly elevated viewpoint (identified as Beacon Terrace). Two figures appear in right foreground. One is swinging a pickaxe while the other, wearing a hat, leans on a shovel. Foliage frames both sides of the composition. The horizon line is in the middle of the scene with rolling hills and trees. There is sky in the background.
