Description
Literature

Although the subject of the bust remains unnidentified, based on the casualness of the dress and relative disorder of his coiffeur, it has been suggested that the man was a writer or artist. The baroque drapery, arranged in agitated, heavy folds, points to a Northern Italian or Southern German origin for the bust. It has also been suggested that the work may be an example of nineteenth-century historicizing when many European sculptuors borrowed freely from the work of the previous century and produced pastiches evocative of the grandeur of another age.
