Description

Half length portrait of a man in 3/4 profile. He stands before a column and looks out toward the viewer across his right shoulder. His left hand rests on a sculpture fragment of a head on a ledge or table in the right foreground. Hisright hand emerges from within his voluminous sleeve right with thumb and index finger gently grasping the material of his clothing across his chest. The inscription identifies the sitter as the painter Hendrick van Balen.
