Description

Portrait of the popular kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō V (1776-1847) who specialized in onnagata, or female roles. Kanzashi hair pieces of tortise shell and one decorated with cherries. Purple silk cloth patch (murasaki bōshi) covers the pate, which was required by officials to be shaven. Frame with green bat motif. Poem at top is by Senzandō Iwao.
