Horizontal composition, interior scene. Four courtesans seated on a tatami mat floor surrounded by folding and sliding screens. Woman at lower left is prepared to write, other women have objects for the incense game. All four women are dressed in elaborate layers of kimono, and all have their hair up with hairpins.
