When by a treaty in 1855 the Wyandottes were given the right of claiming citizenship in the United States, they ceded their lands to the government to be platted and deeded individually to the tribesmen. One portion of land which they withheld for a burial ground was a tract of about two acres, now known as Huron Cemetery. It is in the very center of the business district of Kansas City, Kansas. The cemetery has been the subject of many court battles, finally reaching the Supreme Court, which authorized its sale. Public opinion, however, still maintains place for this cemetery in the heart of the city and it has never been sold.
