The Pottawatomie Baptist Mission, established in 1848, was located five miles west of Topeka. It served as a manual labor school and had thirty children in daily attendance. The Pottawatomie tribe in 1862 moved westward, abandoning the school. The main building of the group still stands, serving now as a stable.
