Description

Commercial Street, Atchison, Kansas is a lithograph made from a sketch by William M. Merrick in Harper's Weekly, July 28, 1866. This picture illustrates an everyday scene at that time. The artist has depicted the style of buildings in the business section - a medley of brick structures and cottonwood shanties. The bank is the Exchange National Bank, still operating today, the cashier a grandson of the founder. Since its inception the bank has been conducted by this one family. The figures on the street are drawn from life.
