Description

Under the Council Oak in Council Grove a treaty of peace was signed between the United States and the Osage Indians. August 19, 1825, giving the white men un-molested use of the Santa Fe Trail across the great plains. The town recieved its name at this council. The tree, said to be 300 years old, is one of the relics of an old oak grove which covered a large part of the bottom land east of the Neosho river.
