Blue sod house with blue sky and white clouds. Yard in front with blue and greenish grass.

In early days when wood could be obtained only with difficulty, there were more sod houses in Kansas than any other kind. Cottonwood trees from nearby streams provided rafters. The roof was shingled with other sods which grew green under spring rains. These crude one or two-roomed shelters had the advantage of being warm in winter and cool in summer. The walls were two or three feet thick.
