Photographs are often used as historical documents referencing a single point in time. They represent a momentary situation through the perspective of the photographer. Larry Schwarm took these photographs as part of a National Science Foundation research project, working as part of the research team to investigate farmers’ land use decisions. Schwarm’s images document the individuals whose decisions were the subject of that research. By engaging with the images of these individuals and the landscapes they inhabit, we can gain a better understanding of the complexities of agriculture and the people who create it, including the ways farmers make difficult decisions that have widespread and long-term implications.
