Possibly a depiction of the sinking of the Lusitania, a large, burning black ship tips while sinking into the water, smoke billows from its surface while pale waves rush against the hull, in the middle and foregrounds are two lifeboats crowded with bodies of women and children, one woman stares outwards while touching her stringy hair, another female is turned away from the viewer but appears standing with arms flung upwards to the sky in the direction of the sinking boat, choppy waves surround the lifeboats.
