A terrified blond child is held above the waves of a vast seascape by a woman who is mostly submerged in the water. The ocean extends to the horizon. This image’s caption, “under the sea” refers to the initiation of submarine warfare in mid-February 1915, when German U-boats began attacking merchant ships.
