The painting depicts a monk surrounded by five people. They sit, stand, or kneel down to observe the monk render a single line of calligraphy. Showing various poses and gestures, chattering and laughing, they seem engaged by the monk’s writing performance. The figures are rendered in rough, swift strokes. A light orange color denotes faces, hands and legs.
