Half-length portrait of of an older man (identified as the artist Jacques-Louis David) with curly hair and a thoughtful expression, sitting in a wooden chair and dressed in a double-breated coat, starched white shirt, and white cravat. The effects of a recent stroke are visible in the proper left side of the man’s face, where the slightly drooping corner of his mouth and the limp quality of his cheek suggest lingering paralysis. A medal of honor is pinned to his right breast. He holds a stylus or paint brush and a tablet, upon which a classical scene is visible.
