Iconography of Jesus in the winepress, where his body becomes grapes that become wine, connects Jesus’ suffering during the Crucifixion to the Christian rite of the Eucharist, in which bread and wine are consumed in remembrance of his body and blood. This representation of the mystic winepress showing Jesus with a vine growing from a wound in his side is distinctive to the region of Romania.
