George Marston served as expedition artist for Ernest Shackleton’s (1874-1922) Nimrod expedition. Coastal views like this reproduction after Marston’s original painting played an important role in the pictorial documentation of Antarctica and proved remarkably accurate when compared to surveys conducted during expeditions. This visual record is markedly different from the bird’s eye view seen in other maps in this exhibition. The straight-on perspective emphasizes the striking desolation of this frigid and icy desert.
