Toile de Jouy quilt in blue and white, lined with white linen. Motifs include full length male and female figures in a tropical setting, boats with sails on masts, and row boats. The motifs are repeated all over the surface of the quilt fragment. (The subject matter is drawn from the novel “Paul et Virginie” by Bernardin St. Pierre, published in 1788. Set on the island of Mauritius, the French tragedy tells of lovers separated by death.)
