The carved wooden paddle-like staff has a flat blade with a hook at the end. The blade is decorated with incised designs in two panels consisting of a diamond with a starburst in a circle on either side and a "V." Each design is outlined with a straight line rectangle and two scalloped rectangles. There is a starburst in a circle at the bottom of the hook. The same design is present on each side.

The handle has a square cross section and is wrapped with braided plant fibers. There is a loop of braided plant fiber at the end.

The narrow side reads "SAMOA."
