The handheld fan or fly whisk has a short wooden handle and a large tassel of course black hair for the whisk. The handle has strips of light natural plant fiber held in place with black string wrapping, resulting in a series of checkerboard diamond shapes. There are downy white and light brown feathers at the base of the whisk portion. There is a short loop of twisted plant fiber at the end of the handle.
