The rectangle of cotton cloth has an overall checkerboard pattern of dark blue blocks alternating with even smaller checkerboard blocks of grey and tan. The back of the blanket is blue and green flannel. Small pieces of twine are sewn at two corners, and two more pieces on the one long side, near the middle.

The pattern was created using a resist-dye method known as katazome.
