The body of the large barrel shaped drum is made of dark brown wood with faint Asian characters on one side. There are two small metal rings on the sides. The drum head is a layer of rawhide over the top of another layer of rawhide. The bottom layer is held down with two bands of tacks. The holes around the bottom edge give it a scalloped appearance. There are thin strips of lace between the top and bottom layer of rawhide.
