Description
Catalogue raisonné

Small oval format of a woman in 3/4 profile. The bust length image fills the composition. The woman wears a small stiff ruff, untied coif with lace detailing. The inscription includes the artist signature, date 1580, age of the sitter (30) and Dutch phrase that translates to 'bear sufferings patiently.' The woman is probably the artist's wife Margaretha Jansdochter.
