"Venus Observed," Dec-1980, Elizabeth Broun and Yolanda de Estrada
After etching a large plate showing an expansive imaginary vista, Canaletto cut the plate into three similar sections, slicing directly through the ruined Gothic tomb. The right hand portion of the tomb appears in "A Bishop's Tomb with a View of a Town." Before his time it was a common practice to trim one or more edges of a plate for the sake of the composition, but such radical segmentation of a single plate is Canaletto's innovation.
