Artist and physician Eric Avery installed toilet paper printed with instructions for use of male and female condoms on the walls of five Houston area clubs and coffee shops in conjunction with World AIDS Day in 1995. This installation, sponsored by Houston’s Contemporary Arts Museum, was removed from the walls of one of these coffee shops after the Houston Police Department, responding to a complaint, declared that the installation violated the Texas Penal Code that guards against the display of harmful materials to minors.
