Description
Inscriptions/Signature

A busy street scene is depicted; in the direct foreground on the far left is a bearded man with a top hat, in the center another man with his back turned, and the profile of a young girl. In the left middle ground stands a carriage and two children while on the right three men stroll toward the center of the sidewalk. The sidewalk itself is represented as an expanse of white with an additional diagonal band separated by a thin, black line indicating the demarcation between the sidewalk and the cobblestone street. A streetlamp serves as a frank, stabilizing vertical element in the otherwise busy composition. In the center of the image stands an orange vendor with her cart filled with fruit. To her left is a policeman, to her right, the streetlamp. Other figures are depicted in the background: a nanny leading small children, another top-hatted man, men carrying bundles, women and children walking; a smaller carriage can be seen as can a portion of yet another with the horses leading it in full view. In the upper right corner, a small figure dressed solely in black and carrying a small parcel or portfolio may be a self-portrait. Verso: Text with three separate illustrations.
