Bashō is seated and is loosely wearing a robe and hat and holds a case. Basho’s robe is a deep grey color which appears to be tied with a deep blue cord/sash. His face is strongly colored with a peach color and his lips are painted in strong red. The outline and features of his face are defined by thick, moist grey lines that are painted over with thinner black lines. The top 1/3 of the painting is filled with an inscription. Red seals with white characters at beginning and end of inscription.
