Coleman studied printmaking at the University of Kansas with John Talleur and later taught the subject at the University of Nebraska, where he established the printmaking department. In creating this work, which was inspired by a photograph from a Wichita newspaper, Coleman utilized a variety of intaglio techniques in a dazzling display of printmaking virtuosity.
