Black-and-white, hip-length portrait of a man in profile view (identified as Alfred Tennyson), facing the right side of the image. He is seated in a high-backed, wooden chair that reaches the top of his head. His proper right arm is resting on the arm of the chair. He has dark, wavy hair that reaches the back of his neck, and he has a long beard. He is wearing a dark jacket over a white, collared shirt, and there is a dark dress hat on his lap. The column visible at left is part of the entrance to Tennyson's home, Farringford.
