Description
Literature

Image of the Flagellation based on Martin Schongauer’s late 15th century engraving (1991.0272). Background landscape and halo around Christ figure’s head are the artist’s addition. Frame appears to be contemporary to the work, with black paint and some gilding. The panel has gesso on both sides, with a ¼ inch bevel around the perimeter of the panel, possibly to fit it to its original frame. Frame is not original to the work; it is painted black with and some stamped gilding.
