The handscroll begins with Wang Xizhi seated in a pavilion at the head of the stream. The next screens follow the stream as it flows behind a massive rocky outcrops, then in front of a deep grotto where great wine jugs are stored and pages heat the wine before placing the cups on lily pads to be floated away. The painting continues to follow the stream thereby encountering all the participants in this poetic event along the way and terminates with pages retrieving empty cups just beyond a bridge.
