Portrait of a male figure (identified as Lennep) seated in his study, left arm resting on table with statue and books. The objects on the table - sculpted head, costly illustrated books - identify Lennep as an art collector. But we learn even more about him from his clothing, which is more strikingly rendered and seizes a dressing-gown or nightgown, a garment often worn, as a sign of intimacy and informality, to receive visitors. In portraiture, it was artists, men of letters, musicians and scholars in particular who were depicted in this attire. The rich sheen of the fabric indicates that it is satin, whose costliness testifies to the wearer’s wealth and status.
