Painted scene of man (Chancellor Oliver) greeting students on the steps of a building. Chancellor Oliver is the most important figure and Blair therefore has made him the largest figure in the painting. The scene depicts Old North College, the University's first building, and the initial population of a chancellor, three professors, and forty students, all precisely accounted for by the artist. Typical of Blair's style are the flattened forms, toy like figures, and proportional inconsistencies.
