Event Description
Konōike Tomoko (born 1960 Akita, Japan; lives and works in Tokyo, Japan) earned her BFA in Japanese Painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1985, and over the past decade has created a multi-disciplinary body of work encompassing drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, video animation, and painted screens. Inspired by a range of indigenous and modern Japanese sources, from Shinto animism, and noh drama to manga and pop culture, Konōike’s artwork offers metaphysically charged and compelling narratives that transport viewers to a surreal, mythical world. In late 2016, Konōike will return to the Spencer Museum of Art to install a commission for the exhibition "Temporal Turn: Art and Speculation in Contemporary Asia".
