Event Description
On December 24, 1934, a self-portrait of painter Thomas Hart Benton graced the cover of TIME magazine. He became the most famous artist in America, as notorious for his hard-drinking and ramblings in the backwoods country of Missouri as his virile and uncompromising paintings of the “U.S. Scene.” The same year, Benton painted the Spencer Museum of Art’s iconic painting, The Ballad of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley. Join Spencer Museum Curator Kate Meyer for drinks and a discussion about the painting and the legend who produced it. This series of immersive introductory courses pairs art and libations. Space is limited. Enrollment is $20 per person and includes one drink and light hors d’oeuvres. Register at http://bit.ly/1MAIMln. Email fam@ku.edu or call 785.864.4710 for additional information.
