Dr. Paul Groner specializes in Japanese and Chinese Buddhism with a focus on the relationship between doctrine, monastic discipline, and institutional history in medieval Japan. He is one of the premier scholars of the Japanese Tendai Buddhist tradition. In addition to numerous articles, he is the author of the books Saicho: The Establishment of the Japanese Tendai School, Ryogen and Mount Hiei: Japanese Tendai in the Tenth Century, and has translated Akira Hirakawas History of Early Indian Buddhism into English.
