Event Description
Next week marks the 150th anniversary of Quantrill's Raid, and Lawrence's resilience is cause for citywide celebration. We invite families throughout the community to spend a lively afternoon at the Spencer making art and exploring the rich history of Kansas with a family day that takes the Kansas state motto as its theme. The day will be filled with art and activities, including a visit from quilt artist Marla Jackson and some of her most recent collaborators: area high school students. Curious about the motivations for Quantrill's Raid, the students conducted thorough, original research and discovered that some of the men who rode with Quantrill were African-American. That discovery, among others, served as inspiration for Still We Rise, which Jackson and her students will discuss at the Spencer during this special event. Other activities invite younger visitors to play around with the Kansas state motto to create their own unique Kansas flags, which they can take home and proudly wave. Ad astra per aspera!
