Event Description
Suzuki is Assistant Professor of Ancient & Medieval Japanese Art History at the University of Maryland, College Park. Suzuki resurrects the lost standing Yakushi (Medicine Buddha) statue that was a personal devotional icon belonging to the monk Saicho (767-822), the founder of the Tendai school in Japan. She explores the ritual and iconographical significance of this Yakushi’s standing pose, which reflected very different religious ideals from the seated, monumental Yakushi statues commissioned by imperial and elite members of the Nara and Heian courts.
